How Trips Are Categorized¶
A single trip is rarely just one thing; it's a blend of different characteristics. Expeditions are categorized using a combination of these five lenses to create a rich and descriptive overview.
1. By Core Purpose (The "Why")¶
This is the primary motivation for the trip. What experience are you seeking?
- Relaxation & Leisure: The goal is to unwind and de-stress.
- Cultural & Historical Immersion: The goal is to absorb the history, art, and lifestyle of a place.
- Adventure & Sports: The goal is to engage in physical activities, often in nature.
- Nature & Wildlife: The goal is to experience the natural world and its inhabitants.
- Culinary & Gastronomy: The goal is to explore a destination through its food and drink.
- Events & Festivals: The trip is centered around a specific, time-sensitive event.
- Wellness & Spirituality: The focus is on mental, physical, or spiritual well-being.
2. By Duration and Pace (The "How Long")¶
This defines the timeframe and intensity of the travel.
- Micro-Adventure: Lasts less than 24-48 hours. Low planning, high spontaneity.
- Weekend Getaway: A 2-3 day trip.
- Week-Long Vacation: A standard 5-10 day trip.
- Extended Journey: Anything from two weeks to a few months.
- Sabbatical or "Slow-madic" Travel: Long-term travel (3+ months) focused on living in a place rather than just visiting.
3. By Travel Style & Budget (The "How")¶
This describes the overall philosophy and financial approach to the trip.
- Backpacking / Budget: Traveling with minimal luggage on a tight budget.
- Mid-Range / "Flashpacker": A blend of independent travel with comfortable accommodation and transport.
- Luxury: Focuses on high-end comfort and service.
- All-Inclusive: A package trip where most costs are included upfront.
4. By Social Context (The "Who")¶
Who you travel with fundamentally changes the experience.
- Solo Travel: Traveling alone.
- Couple / Romantic Getaway: Trips designed for partners.
- Family Travel: Traveling with children of any age.
- Group of Friends: Trips with a social focus.

5. By Geography & Destination Type (The "Where")¶
This is about the physical environment of the destination.

- Coastal / Beach: Focused on the sea and sand.
- Mountain / Alpine: Focused on mountain environments.
- Road Trip: The journey itself is the destination.
