How Trips Are Categorized

A single trip is rarely just one thing; it's a blend of different characteristics. Expeditions are categorized using a combination of these five lenses to create a rich and descriptive overview.

1. By Core Purpose (The "Why")

This is the primary motivation for the trip. What experience are you seeking?

  • Relaxation & Leisure: The goal is to unwind and de-stress.
  • Cultural & Historical Immersion: The goal is to absorb the history, art, and lifestyle of a place.
  • Adventure & Sports: The goal is to engage in physical activities, often in nature.
  • Nature & Wildlife: The goal is to experience the natural world and its inhabitants.
  • Culinary & Gastronomy: The goal is to explore a destination through its food and drink.
  • Events & Festivals: The trip is centered around a specific, time-sensitive event.
  • Wellness & Spirituality: The focus is on mental, physical, or spiritual well-being.

2. By Duration and Pace (The "How Long")

This defines the timeframe and intensity of the travel.

  • Micro-Adventure: Lasts less than 24-48 hours. Low planning, high spontaneity.
  • Weekend Getaway: A 2-3 day trip.
  • Week-Long Vacation: A standard 5-10 day trip.
  • Extended Journey: Anything from two weeks to a few months.
  • Sabbatical or "Slow-madic" Travel: Long-term travel (3+ months) focused on living in a place rather than just visiting.

3. By Travel Style & Budget (The "How")

This describes the overall philosophy and financial approach to the trip.

  • Backpacking / Budget: Traveling with minimal luggage on a tight budget.
  • Mid-Range / "Flashpacker": A blend of independent travel with comfortable accommodation and transport.
  • Luxury: Focuses on high-end comfort and service.
  • All-Inclusive: A package trip where most costs are included upfront.

4. By Social Context (The "Who")

Who you travel with fundamentally changes the experience.

  • Solo Travel: Traveling alone.
  • Couple / Romantic Getaway: Trips designed for partners.
  • Family Travel: Traveling with children of any age.
  • Group of Friends: Trips with a social focus.
  • Guided Tour: Traveling with a pre-organized group led by a tour guide.

5. By Geography & Destination Type (The "Where")

This is about the physical environment of the destination.

  • Urban / City Break: Exploring a major city.
  • Rural / Countryside: Escaping the city for nature and tranquility.
  • Coastal / Beach: Focused on the sea and sand.
  • Mountain / Alpine: Focused on mountain environments.
  • Road Trip: The journey itself is the destination.
  • Multi-Destination / "Country Hopping": Visiting several cities or countries in one trip.
